Florida State Takes A Pair From Maryland Softball

May 4, 2000

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Terrapin sophomore Beth Radford (Dunkirk, Md.) was 3-for-6 (.500) on the day and launched a three-run homer in Game 1 as the Maryland softball team (28-27, 3-5 ACC, 4-6 SASA) dropped a pair of conference games to Florida State (48-25, 6-2 ACC, 8-2 SASA). With the three-run blast, Radford tied Maryland's single-season RBI mark, bringing her yearly total to 38. The single-season record of 38 RBI was originally set by Radford in 1999.

Florida State pitcher Leslie Malerich picked up her thirty-second victory of the season in Game 1, while Maryland's Amanda Bettker (St. Petersburg, Fla.) took the loss. The Seminoles were on the board in the opening at-bat, as Staci Brandon led off with a triple and pinch-runner Felicia Williams crossed on a Serita Brooks sacrifice fly. FSU's lead was temporarily erased in the bottom of the first when Radford went deep with a line-drive smash over the left field fence that scored Sarah Putnam (Chesapeake, Va.) and Jennifer Potzman (Trexlertown, Pa.). The `Noles came back with two runs on four hits in the third, two runs on a homer by Teresa Edenfield in the sixth, and a five run inning in the seventh to bury the Terps, 10-3. Radford was a perfect 3-for-3 in Game 1 with three RBI, a run scored and a walk, while Edenfield was 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBI.

FSU's Jen White-Stokes improved her record to 13-8 in an exciting, back-and-forth Game 2. Maryland's Danielle Carpenter (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) suffered the loss, scattering six hits in seven innings pitched. The game was tied at one in the fifth inning when Terp sophomore Holly Baldwin (Olney, Md.) ripped the first home run of her career over the right field fence, putting the Terps up by a 2-1 advantage. The Seminoles would not go quietly, however, as an RBI-single by Natalie Bennett tied the contest in the sixth. With the game and their postseason chances on the line, Florida State manufactured a run in the seventh as Edenfield reached on an error, was sacrificed to second by Becky Brock, and scored on a Brooks single. FSU held on for the 3-2 win.

The Terrapins wrap up their season with a non-conference twinbill vs. Princeton on Saturday, May 6, at 2 p.m. With the victories, Florida State's 8-2 SASA record shores up an automatic NCAA bid for the Seminoles.
