Terps, Hoyas Draw To 1-1 Tie In Final Of FILA Preseason Kick-Off

Aug. 26, 2000

College Park, Md. - The Maryland men's soccer team closed out preseason action today with a 1-1 tie against the Georgetown Hoyas on the final day of the Maryland/FILA Preseason College Kick-off. Virginia and St. John's ended the first game of the evening in a 1-1 draw as well.

Despite some close calls, both teams were held scoreless through the first half. Maryland's offense threaded passes together several times and threatened Hoya keeper Brian O'Hagan with five good shots in the half. Perhaps the best chance for either team came when Georgetown's Khary Robinson gave the Terps a scare from point blank range. Terrapin keeper Christian Lewis (Ellicott City, Md.) saved the day for the Terps and muffled the shot, one of four the Hoyas got off in the opening half.

Maryland would put one on the scoreboard in the 57th minute to start the scoring when sophomore Scott Buete (Bowie, Md.) found classmate Reed Rickert (Sewickly, Pa.) from the left side of the field. The 6-2 striker elevated for the header past the Hoyas' second half keeper Tim Hogan to put the Terps up one. Less than 10 minutes later, Georgetown was on the board when Nate Port hit a shot from the right side. Robinson was credited with an assist on the play.

The game would finish in a tie when regulation expired, as overtime is not contested in the Maryland/FILA Preseason College Classic. The Terps were the only team to finish the weekend with a victory after earning a 1-0 win over St. John's on Friday night. Virginia finished the weekend with two ties, a scoreless draw against Georgetown on Friday night and a 1-1 tie against St. John's to begin the Saturday action. St. John's ended the weekend with a 1-1 tie against Virginia and a one-goal loss to the Terps on Friday. Georgetown ended the weekend with two draws, a 1-1 draw against the Terps Saturday night to finish the tournament and a scoreless draw against Virginia on day one of the tournament.

Maryland begins its season next weekend on Sept. 1 against the Jacksonville Dolphins at the Virginia/Coca-Cola Classic. Game time is 5 p.m. The Terps finish the tournament with a match-up against South Florida on Sunday, Sept. 3 at noon. The men's soccer team returns home to meet No. 1 Indiana on Sept. 8 at 7:30 p.m. during the Maryland/FILA Classic. Virginia and South Carolina will complete the tournament field that weekend and open up at 5 p.m.
