Terps Capture Maryland Invitational With Win Over East Carolina

College Park, Md.- Senior middle hitter Maren Stuart (Tampa, Fla.) smacked 13 and had a .455 hitting percentage as the University of Maryland women's volleyball team defeated East Carolina in the championship game of the Maryland Invitational, 15-5, 15-13, 15-4.

Senior middle hitter Nnenna Amobi (Silver Spring, Md.) pounded 12 kills and sophomore outside hitter Carey Brennan (Smithburg, Md.) chipped in with 8 kills as the Terps hit .352 as a team in the three-game victory.

Sophomore setter Lindsay Davey (Aurora, Colo.) controlled the Maryland attack as she dished out 39 assists in the eighth straight win for the Terps.

"This was a goal of the team's if we played good offense and defense that we could perform very well," said coach Janice Kruger. "This was just a good tournament all away around for us. My overall feeling is that as a team we are as prepared as we can be for the start of ACC play Tuesday night versus Wake Forest."

Earlier in the day, Maryland got by a pesky Morgan State squad in four games, 17-15, 15-10, 16-14, 15-3. Carey Brennan led the Terp attack with a season-high 26 kills and Lindsay Davey contributed 52 assists in the win.

Senior Maren Stuart was named tournament MVP and was joined on the all-tournament team with fellow Terps Carey Brennan and Lindsay Davey. East Carolina, which finished the invitational second, placed senior outside hitter Cinta Claro and junior outside hitter Whitney Brawner on the all-tournament squad. William & Mary's junior Stacy Woodson also received all-tournament honors.

In other action today, East Carolina defeated William & Mary in game four of the invitational (3-1) 15-3, 15-8, 15-5, 15-7. In game five, William & Mary defeated Morgan State in the third-place match (3-0) 15-3, 15-3, 15-1.

With the two victories on the day, Maryland improves to 8-3 on the year. The Terps open their ACC portion of the schedule Tuesday, Sept. 19, at home versus Wake Forest. The match is set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
