Terps Jump In This Week's Top 25 Football Polls

Oct. 14, 2001

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland has earned its highest regular season ranking since 1983, jumping 10 spots in the Associated Press poll and six spots in the ESPN/USA Today poll. The Terps, who are coming off a 20-17 overtime win over then-No. 15 Georgia Tech, are ranked 12th by Associated Press and 14th by ESPN/USA Today.

The Terps host Duke this Saturday, Oct. 20, in a homecoming game at Byrd Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m., and tickets are available at www.ticketmaster.com, or by calling 800-462-TERP.

Winners of their first six games, the Terps became the first team in the country to achieve bowl eligibility when they came from behind in the fourth quarter to defeat the Yellow Jackets last Thursday in a game televised nationally on ESPN. To achieve bowl eligibility, teams must have six wins against Division I-A opponents (seven Division I-A wins if playing a 12-game regular season schedule).

Maryland's ranking is the highest by the Terps since November of 1983, when Maryland was 11th in the Associated Press poll.
