Terps Fall In Five Games To Florida State In ACC Volleyball Action

COLLEGE PARK, Md.- For the second time this season, Maryland and Florida State battled each other for five games, but this time the Seminoles earned the (3-2) 30-28, 29-31, 30-27, 25-30, 15-9 victory in ACC volleyball action Saturday evening at Ritchie Coliseum. The Terps had won earlier this season in five games at Florida State.

Saturday's match was a close battle throughout with each team's best player rising to the top for their respective teams.

In game one, FSU earned a hard-fought 30-28 victory. Senior middle hitter Norisha Campbell tallied eight of her match-best 29 kills to lead the Seminoles in the opening frame.

In the second stanza, the Terps evened the match at one game apiece by slipping past the Noles, 31-29. Junior outside hitter Carey Brennan (Smithsburg, Md.) slammed 10 kills for the game and racked up six digs to lead the Terps' charge.

FSU earned another close victory in the third game, winning by a score of 30-27. Campbell added another eight kills while setter Jennifer Anderson dished out 17 assists in the frame for the Seminoles.

Maryland did not go down without a fight, coming back strong to win the fourth game, 30-25. Brennan led the way with six kills while senior middle hitter Willette Dority (Congers, N.Y.) chipped in with five kills to help the Terps to the win. Sophomore outside hitter Maria DiLivio (Hamilton, Ontario) also finished the game with five kills while junior setter Lindsay Davey (Aurora, Colo.) handed out 17 assists in the game for the Terrapins.

In the fifth and deciding game, FSU jumped out to a commanding 12-4 lead and never looked back. Despite a late rally by the Terps, the Seminoles closed out the match with a 15-9 victory.

Norisha Campbell led FSU with 29 kills and seven blocks while Jennifer Anderson finished with 63 assists for FSU. Outside hitter Alexandra Sevillano also had a strong match, finishing with 21 kills and 12 digs.

Carey Brennan was outstanding for the Terps, finishing with a season-high 25 kills and equaling a career-high with 22 digs. In two matches this season vs. FSU, Brennan has totaled 45 kills.

Willette Dority tied career-highs in kills (16) and blocks (8) for the Terps while Lynnsy Jones had another good outing, coming up big with 14 kills, 8 digs and a career-high five blocks. Lindsay Davey led all players with 64 assists and also finished with 11 digs.

The loss dropped the Terps back to .500 at 9-9 overall and 5-5 in the ACC. FSU improved to 9-9 with the victory and 6-4 in the ACC.

Maryland finishes its three-match homestand tomorrow vs. No. 25 North Carolina. The two teams are scheduled to begin play at 5 p.m. in Ritchie Coliseum.
