Terps Drop Five-Game Decision At Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- The University of Maryland women's volleyball team lost in five games at Virginia Saturday night in Charlottesville, Va. The Terrapins dropped the first two games of the match before pulling even, only to lose the match in the fifth and final game.

The host Cavaliers won the first two games of the match by a slim 30-27 margin in both games. The Terps got back on track in the third game, winning 30-18, and in the fourth game, 30-24.

UVa proved to be too much in the fifth frame, winning the match 15-9.

Junior outside hitter Carey Brennan (Smithsburg, Md.) led all players with 16 kills and 16 digs. Two other Terrapins finished in double digit kills. Senior middle hitter Willette Dority (Congers, N.Y.), the reigning ACC Player of the Week, matched Brennan with 16 kills to go along with her team-best four blocks. Dority led all players with a .387 hitting percentage for the match.

Freshman middle hitter Alexandra Toregas (Chevy Chase, Md.), who has come on strong of late, finished with career-highs in kills (14) and blocks (5) for Maryland.

The loss dropped the Terps back to .500 at 10-10 overall and 6-6 in the ACC. Virginia improved to 7-13 with the victory and 3-9 in conference play.

The Terrapins return to action Tuesday (Oct. 30) at Wake Forest. The match is set to begin at 6 p.m.
