KITTY HAWK, N.C. -
Maryland let a five-stroke lead slip from its grasp on Tuesday as the Terrapin golfers saw UNC Wilmington shoot three-under par as a team to pass them and win the ODU/Seascape college golf invitational. Maryland, which finished six under par for the tournament, was led by seniors Pete Toole (Lancaster, Pa.) and Corey Brigham (Rumson, N.J.) who finished in second and sixth places, respectively.
Maryland and UNC Wilmington staged a two-team race to the finish on Tuesday, outdistancing their nearest competitor, Furman, by 12 strokes. UNCW's Bill Lewis (68-70-138) won medalist honors while Toole (68-71-139) finished in a three-way tie for second, just one stroke back.
The Terps led the tournament following the first 18 holes, led by Toole and sophomore Tim Kane (Simsbury, Conn.), each who shot their lowest rounds of the season on Monday. Toole (68-71-139) shot four-under par in the opening round to own a share of the individual lead.
Kane (71-80-151) however, fell from a top ten standing after 18 holes to finish three-over par and in 36th place. Brigham (72-69-141) and junior John Moheyer (Lima, Ohio) were the Terps' only performers to improve their scores in Tuesday's second round. Moheyer (76-71-147) shot one-under par on Tuesday to finish 20th.
