Wake Forest Tops Maryland Volleyball In Four Games

COLLEGE PARK, Md.- The Maryland women's volleyball team saw its four-game winning streak come to an end Saturday evening against Wake Forest, with the Demon Deacons pulling out a (3-1) 30-26, 25-30, 30-23, 30-22 victory at Ritchie Coliseum.

Wake won a tightly contested first game, 30-26, behind the efforts of junior setter Ashlee Phillips. The California native dished out 16 assists and recorded two kills in leading the Demon Deacons to the opening game victory. The Terps battled throughout the game, with junior outside hitter Carey Brennan (Smithsburg, Md.) leading the way with five kills in the opening stanza.

In the second frame, the Terps evened the match at one game apiece. Brennan led the way again with five kills and senior middle hitter Willette Dority (Congers, N.Y.) also chipped in with five kills to give the Terps' a 30-25 game two victory.

Wake would regroup and come back strong in the third stanza by winning 30-23. Senior outside hitter Trina Maso de Moya led the way with five of her match-high 21 kills in the third game. Maso de Moya also led all players with 22 digs on the night.

In the fourth and deciding frame, the Demon Deacons continued to ride Maso de Moya, as she registered seven kills in the final game for the 30-22 win. Sophomore middle hitter Jessica Hauff also had a big fourth game by smacking five kills for Wake. Phillips had a match-high 66 assists and four kills for the winners.

Brennan led all Maryland players with 17 kills and 14 digs for her team-best eighth double-double of the season. Dority also had a strong showing with 16 kills including a .414 hitting percentage.

Junior setter Lindsay Davey (Aurora, Colo.) handed out 48 assists and led the Terps with three aces in the loss.

The defeat evened Maryland's record at 7-7 on the season and 3-3 in ACC play. Wake Forest improved to 9-6 overall and 4-2 in the conference.

The Terrapins are back in action Friday (Oct. 12) at Georgia Tech. The match is scheduled to get underway at 7 p.m. in Atlanta.
