COLLEGE PARK, Md.- The Maryland volleyball team closed out the regular season and their stint playing at Ritchie Coliseum Saturday with a four-game loss to Georgia Tech on Senior Day. The Terps dropped to 11-13 overall and 7-9 in the ACC with a 26-30, 30-19, 30-21, 30-21 loss to the Yellow Jackets. The defeat also marked the final game played at Ritchie Coliseum for the Terps since they will be moving into the Comcast Center next season.
The Terrapins got off to a quick start by winning the first game, 30-26. As a team, Maryland hit .289 for the game while holding the Yellow Jackets to a .278 hitting percentage. Senior middle hitter Willette Dority (Congers, N.Y.) smacked a team-high seven kills in the opening stanza to help pace the Terrapins to victory.
After game one, Georgia Tech roared back to win the final three games in impressive fashion. Tech hit .229 in the second game and then caught fire in the final two frames, hitting .387 in game three and .676 in game four.
Freshman right side Lauren Sauer led the Yellow Jackets with a match-high 18 kills for the winners. Three other Jackets finished with double-figures in kills including senior outside hitter Maja Pachale (13), sophomore middle hitter Alexandra Preiss (12) and senior middle hitter Kyleen Bell (11).
Junior outside hitter Carey Brennan (Smithsburg, Md.) led Maryland with 17 kills while also chipping in with seven digs. Sophomore outside hitter Maria DiLivio (Hamilton, Ontario) also finished in double-figures in kills with 15 and also contributed 10 digs and three blocks. Dority, playing her final match at home for the Terps along with senior defensive specialist Shannon Toback (Ellicott City, Md.), smacked 14 kills for the Terrapins.
The Terps return to action next week at the ACC Volleyball Championship at Florida State. The championship runs from November 15-18 and the seeds will be released on Sunday night. Maryland should be the No. 6 seed and face the No. 3 seed, which looks to be Georgia Tech.
