Box Score

BOCA RATON, Fla. - Freshman Casey Leiter (Lake Stevens, Wash.) notched her first collegiate base hit to drive in two runs in the fifth inning, but it was not enough as the Terrapins (4-4) fell 5-3 to the No. 16 Florida State Seminoles in round-robin play at the Florida Atlantic-Worth Invitational. The contest, which does not count toward either team's conference records, gives Maryland a 2-1 slate in the tournament as they prepare to face the host Owls at 7 p.m. this evening.

The Terrapins faced a five-run deficit before threatening a comeback with their three-run fifth. A Brandi Stuart two-run homer in the top of the first inning gave the Seminoles (15-3) an early lead, and two singles and three hit batters put FSU up 4-0 after four. The Terps trailed by five after a Natalie Bennett RBI-single in the top of the fifth.

Terp junior Kiesha Pickeral (Hughesville, Md.) led off Maryland's half of the inning with a single to left. Pinch runner Amanda Kipnis (Northbrook, Ill.) advanced to third after designated player Monica Cyphert (Warren, Ohio) launched a double to right center. Following a lineout, pinch hitter Leiter laced FSU hurler Jessica van der Linden's offering down the left field line for a double, scoring both baserunners. After Leiter stole third and Jen Peel (St. Leonard, Md.) and Michelle Burrell (Owego, N.Y.) walked, senior Jennifer Potzman (Trexlertown, Pa.) was hit by a pitch to cross the Terps' third run of the inning. Relief pitcher Jen White-Stokes was able to get out of trouble to make the final 5-3.

Maryland right hander Jenn Shellhammer (Slatington, Pa.) took her second loss of the season, while van der Linden collected her fifth win for FSU. Prior to her meeting with the Terrapins, van der Linden had pitched 25 innings without allowing a run.

Terp rookie hurler Liz Gall (Bothell, Wash.) scattered four hits and one earned run in 4.2 innings in her second straight day of solid relief.

Round-robin play concludes this evening as the Terps clash with Florida Atlantic. The seedings will be determined for championship bracket play following that contest.
