TAMPA, Fla. - Senior Jenn Shellhammer's (Slatington, Pa.) hard work and competitive spirit turned in large dividends for the Terrapins in the consolation bracket semifinal, as the right-hander struck out eight to defeat Tennessee-Chattanooga, 1-0. Shellhammer's hard-fought effort earned her first victory of the season.

The Terrapins made the only dent on the scoreboard when junior Kiesha Pickeral (Hughesville, Md.) led off the second inning with a rocket over the left field fence. It was her fourth homer of the season, and second in the weekend's tournament.

The Lady Mocs attempted to answer in the third, as Dana Reed tried to score from second on a Angela Brewer single, but a strong throw by left fielder Casey Leiter (Lake Stevens, Wash.) and an accurate relay by third baseman Jillian Callaway (Brandywine, Md.) nailed the runner at the plate.

Shellhammer struck out the side in the UTC fourth, and then brilliantly worked out of a jam in the fifth with a little help from her defense. Tennessee-Chattanooga threatened with second and third and one out after two Lady Mocs reached base and advanced on a wild pitch. The right-hander forced a soft pop-up to second and a fly out to left to cut Chattanooga's rally short.

Shellhammer retired the Lady Mocs in order in the sixth and seventh to finish with her season-high strikeout total. The final count also tied her record for strikeouts in a game as a Terrapin after fanning eight against Campbell at the Triangle Classic on Feb. 19 of last season.

The Terps are taking on Boston University, 3-0 winners over Michigan State, in a game in progress for the consolation bracket championship. It is currently 0-0 in the top of the Terrier third.
