Softball Shuts Down Cleveland State, 6-0

March 23, 2001

Box Score

MARIETTA, Ga. - The Terrapin softball squad continued to get it done at the plate in Game 2 of pool play at the Buzz Classic, collecting eight hits to down Cleveland State, 6-0. Led by sophomore Jillian Callaway's (Brandywine, Md.) 3-for-4, two-run, two-RBI effort, Maryland collected eight base hits to bring its single-day total to 18. The Terps have outscored opponents 14-1 in two pool play victories at the ninth-annual Georgia Tech Buzz Classic.

Freshman hurler Monica Cyphert (Warren, Ohio) fanned four Vikings in the win, going the full seven innings and even adding a single to help her own cause. The strong showing evens the newcomer's record at 5-5 on the season.

The Terps were first to crack the scoreboard in the top of the second, capitalizing on two Cleveland State errors. Freshman Casey Leiter (Lake Stevens, Wash.) reached on an error and went on to score on a Viking miscue, while a base hit by senior Annmarie Browne (Lansdale, Pa.) to the shortstop crossed junior Danielle Carpenter (Mt. Laurel, N.J.).

Maryland picked up another run in the sixth to take a 3-0 advantage. After Callaway led off with a double to right center, the energetic sophomore scampered to third on a groundout and came around to score on a misplayed bouncer by the Viking shortstop.

Things got worse for Cleveland State in the seventh. The ACC's leader in bases-on-balls, senior Jennifer Potzman (Trexlertown, Pa.), drew a walk to lead off. A two-out free pass to Radford brought the hot-hitting Callaway to the dish, and the infielder drove both baserunners home with another two-bagger to right.

Callaway's effort capped a 3-for-7, three-run, two-RBI performance day one total. Her base hit and RBI total are both career-highs as six Terrapins enjoyed multi-hit days. Cyphert went 4-for-8 (.500) in addition to her Game 2 pitching decision.

The Terps are back in action in pool play on Saturday. Games against Princeton and Connecticut are scheduled for 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. as the Buzz Classic rolls on. Championship bracket play begins Saturday evening after seeds are set following the 5 p.m. games.
