Box Score
COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The Maryland pitching staff rose to the occasion once again, battling blustery conditions and the Maine Black Bears to help the Terrapins take an extra inning 1-0 victory. In what turned out to be a pitchers' duel, starter Jenn Shellhammer (Slatington, Pa.) and Amanda Bettker (St. Petersburg, Fla.) struck out seven and shut out the Bears for eight innings, long enough for the Terps (24-13) to break the stalemate and collect the win.
Senior right fielder Annmarie Browne (Lansdale, Pa.) delivered the deciding strike, smoking a shot through the left side with one out in the bottom of the eighth to score freshman Monica Cyphert (Warren, Ohio). The newcomer had launched a double to right center to lead off the inning and was sacrificed to third by senior Michelle Burrell (Owego, N.Y.).
The Terps threatened with runners in scoring position in the first and second, but were unable to throw the knockout punch until the extra session. Meanwhile, Maryland's Shellhammer tossed perfect second, fourth and fifth innings and used a strikeout in the third to squelch the Bears only real threat.
Bettker (7-3) came on in the sixth and struck out the side. She allowed only one base hit in three innings and fanned a total of five.
The Terrapins have now won nine of their last 11 games. Cyphert has hit in seven of the last eight.
Maryland travels to Princeton, N.J., on Saturday for the Princeton Invitational. The Terps meet the Marist Red Foxes at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. before battling the Tigers for the second time this season at 3 p.m. Maryland defeated Princeton, 1-0, at the Buzz Classic on March 24 and is 5-5-1 all-time in that series.
