Box Score

COLLEGE PARK, Md.- The Maryland volleyball team used a dramatic comeback to capture its first ACC victory of the season over Virginia Tuesday evening at Ritchie Coliseum. After seeing Virginia win two of the first three games of the match, the Terps rallied to win the match's final two frames to seal the exciting (3-2) 30-22, 28-30, 20-30, 30-21, 16-14 victory over the Cavaliers.

The Terps started the match in impressive fashion, winning the first game 30-22. Maryland used a total team effort on defense to limit the Cavs to a -.071 hitting percentage in the opening game.

After watching Virginia storm back to win the next two games, the Terps were in a tight match in the fourth game before junior outside hitter Carey Brennan (Smithsburg, Md.) took over. With the score deadlocked at 10 in the fourth game, Brennan keyed a 5-0 Maryland spurt with three kills to push the Terps' advantage to 15-10. Maryland would not look back from there and went on to win the game, 30-21.

In the exciting fifth game, the Terps raced out to a 6-0 lead thanks to three quick kills by Brennan. Virginia would come back once again to tie the match at 14. Sophomore outside hitter Maria DiLivio (Hamilton, Ontario) then came up with the play of the game as she slammed her career-best 20th kill of the night to give Maryland a 15-14 advantage. With the contest on the line, the Cavaliers committed a ball handling error to give the Terps the 16-14 victory.

DiLivio led the team with the 20 kills, breaking her career-high of 19 she set against Georgetown and Bowling Green earlier this season. Junior setter Lindsay Davey (Aurora, Colo.) had her finest performance of the year, finishing with a match and season-high 65 assists to go along with 12 digs and a team-best three service aces.

Brennan finished the match with her fourth double-double of the season with 17 kills and 13 digs. Sophomore right side Lynnsy Jones (Castro Valley, Calif.) also produced a double-double with 15 kills and 10 digs and committed only two hitting errors on the night.

Senior middle hitter Willette Dority (Congers, N.Y.) was brilliant in the middle for the Terps finishing with 16 kills and an impressive .609 hitting percentage. Sophomore defensive specialist Fiona DeFreitas (Lanham, Md.) also had a night to remember as she collected a career-high 16 digs for the winners. Freshman outside hitter Sarah Treadwell (Pearland, Texas) also chipped in with a career-best 12 digs as the Terps as a team finished the match with a season-high 82 digs.

The victory improved the Terps to 4-6 on the year and 1-2 in the ACC. The loss sent Virginia to 5-5 overall and 1-2 in conference play.

Maryland returns to the court Friday (Sept. 28) at Florida State. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
