COLLEGE PARK, Md. - -
Maryland defender Philip Salyer (Dallas, Texas) has been named Co-ACC Player of the Week for his MVP performance in the Virginia Soccer Classic. The sophomore shared the honor with Wake Forest goalkeeper William Hesmer, who allowed only one goal and grabbed two wins in 180 minutes of action. The ACC Player of the Week honor is the first of Salyer's career.
To earn conference honors, Salyer scored the Terps' golden goal at the 119:20 mark to lift Maryland to the 2-1 upset win over No. 7 UCLA. The starting defender also turned in two solid efforts for the Terps, beginning the 2001 campaign 2-0 with a pair of 2-1 wins over No. 7 UCLA, in double overtime, and Liberty.
Fresh off his spring and summer with the U.S. Under-20 team, Salyer was an incredibly versatile player for Maryland last year moonlighting in the midfield when the Terps were hit hard by injuries. A defender at heart, he scored four goals and added two assists in 2000. This season, with a healthy line-up Salyer has returned to hit usual position in the back, where he received preseason All-America honors from College Soccer Online.
Maryland's home schedule opens with 2000 College Cup finalist Creighton at the Maryland/FILA Classic on Sept. 7 at 7:30 p.m. and continues against American on Sept. 9 at 2:30 p.m. The Terp women's soccer team to follow at 5 p.m. against East Carolina, also on Ludwig Field.
