Friedgen Named AFCA Coach Of Year

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Ralph Friedgen, the consensus national Coach of the Year for 2001, Tuesday was named national co-Coach of the Year along with Miami's Larry Coker by the American Football Coaches Association.

The AFCA Coach of the Year award is the oldest of all Coach of the Year awards.

The latest honor for Friedgen brings to 11 the number of national coach of the year citations for for the Maryland coach, who guided the Terps to a 10-2 record and an ACC title.

Friedgen and Coker are the third duo to share AFCA National Coach of the Year honors since it was first awarded in 1935.

Tuesday's announcement was made in San Antonio at the AFCA's annual convention.

On Thursday night, the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) will announce its selection as national Coach of the Year in an event televised live on FOX Sports from Phoenix, Ariz. Friedgen, one of three finalists, will be in attendance.
