Aiken, S.C. -
Behind a second consecutive sub-par round from senior Corey Brigham (Rumson, N.J.), the University of Maryland men's golf team recorded its best score of the spring season today en route to claiming an 11th-place finish at the Cleveland Golf Collegiate Championship at Palmetto Golf Club. The Terps shot a five-over-par 289 in the third round, bettering Monday's second round score by three shots, and moved into a tie with Florida State at 877 (296-292-289).
Virginia Tech claimed the team title by 15 shots over runner-up South Florida, but South Florida's Tele Wightman won the individual title on the third hole of a sudden death playoff against Virginia Tech's Johnson Wagner.
A day after he tied for the field's low second round score with a four-under-par 67, Brigham shot a one-under-par 70 in the third round. He tied VCU's Steven Jenkins and Texas Tech's Mark Hull for seventh place, marking the Terps' first top-ten individual finish of the spring. Brigham also recorded back-to-back sub-par scores in a tournament for the first time since the 2001 ACC Championships.
Junior John Moheyer (Lima, Ohio) recorded the Terps' next-best finish with a 44th-place tie at 220 (73-73-74). Sophomore Tim Kane (Simsbury, Conn.) rebounded from scores of 76 and 79 in the first two rounds to leap ahead 12 places from Monday and finish with an even-par third round of 71, good for 61st place. Rounding out the Terps' scoring, freshman Bobby MacWhinnie (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and senior Pete Toole (Lancaster, Pa.) tied for 64th.
The Terps return to action March 25-26 at their first District II tournament of the spring, the William & Mary Invitational at Williamsburg, Va.
