COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
In a battle for sole possession of second place in the Atlantic Coast Conference, the University of Maryland volleyball team shut out North Carolina, 3-0 (30-24, 30-15, 30-16), at Comcast Center Gymnasium on Sunday. The Terrapins, who improved to 17-4 overall and 6-1 in the ACC, used a balanced attack and a .330 team hitting percentage to sweep the Tar Heels (13-6, 4-2 ACC) and win their ninth straight home match.
Lynnsy Jones (Castro Valley, Calif.), Stephanie Smith (Bethesda, Md.) and Sarah Treadwell (Pearland, Texas) led the Terps' attack. Jones and Smith finished with 11 kills each, while Treadwell posted a double-double with 10 kills, 17 digs and three blocks. Smith also contributed four blocks (three solo) and hit .625, and Jones notched two aces.
The Terps set the tone early, jumping out to an 11-5 lead in game one over North Carolina - who received votes in the latest AVCA/USA TODAY Coaches' Poll. Although the Tar Heels came back within three points on a block by Aletha Green and Molly Pyles, the Terps' 23-20 advantage was as close as North Carolina would get. Maryland took game one by a score of 30-24, and followed with two more convincing victories in games two (30-15) and three (30-16) to clinch the match.
Aimee Huddleston (Keller, Texas) handed out 43 assists to go with seven digs and two blocks, and Maria DiLivio (Hamilton, Ontario) contributed nine kills and seven digs. Rachel Wagener, the nation's leader in blocks, posted five blocks, had eight kills and hit .538 in the victory.
The Tar Heels were led by Molly Pyles, who posted nine kills and four digs.
Maryland is back in action on Friday, Oct. 17, when the Terps travel to Charlottesville, Va., to take on the University of Virginia Cavaliers. That match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
