Sarah Treadwell drilled a career-high 18 kills and the University of Maryland volleyball team won its seventh-straight match Sunday, as it defeated Duke in four games (30-28, 27-30, 30-23, 30-18). Maryland swept the season series with Duke and improved to 20-4 (9-1 ACC), while the Blue Devils fell to 8-15 (4-7 ACC).
Anchoring the Terrapin defense was senior libero Fiona DeFreitas, who posted a career-high 25 digs. Treadwell, in addition to her attacking numbers, added 15 digs and three block assists for a solid all-around effort. Maria DiLivio, Rachel Wagener and Stephanie Smith were also in double-digits in kills for the Terrapins. DiLivio had 12 kills and 14 digs, Wagener had 10 kills and seven blocks and Smith had 10 kills and six blocks.
With the score tied late in game one, 26-26, the Terrapins pulled away on kills by Sarah Treadwell and Stephanie Smith. A solo block by Smith got the Terps to match point, and an error by the Blue Devils gave Maryland the 1-0 lead.
The Terrapins built a four-point cushion early in game two, but Duke came back behind strong blocking and the Terrapins found themselves behind, 21-26, late in the game. Despite battling back to knot the score at 26, the Terps dropped the second game by a score of 27-30.
Maryland cruised to a 30-23 third-game victory behind strong efforts from Lynnsy Jones and Rachel Wagener. Although the Terps hit just .180 in game three, it was good enough to best Duke's hitting percentage of .055 for the win.
Maryland was able to clinch the match in game four, capitalizing on a .291 hitting percentage and good blocking. They won the fourth and final game by a score of 30-18.
Junior reserve outside hitter Jennifer Dewalt came off the bench strong for the Terrapins, posting six kills and a block, and setter Aimee Huddleston gave out 57 assists and had a career-high 17 digs.
The Terrapins return home to Comcast Center Gymnasium for two ACC matches on Friday and Saturday. On Friday, Oct. 31, the Terps will battle Clemson at 7 p.m., and on Saturday, Nov. 1, the Terps will look to upset No. 4 Georgia Tech in a 7 p.m. match in Comcast Center Gymnasium.
