The University of Maryland women's volleyball team defeated NC State, 3-0 (30-27, 30-23, 30-17), at home in Comcast Center Gymnasium Tuesday night. With the conference victory, the Terps improve to 15-4 overall, 4-1 in the ACC, while the Wolfpack falls to 6-12, 0-5 in the ACC.
The Terps were led by right side hitter Lynnsy Jones (Castro Valley, Calif.), middle blocker Stephanie Smith (Bethesda, Md.) and setter Aimee Huddleston (Keller, Texas). Jones was the only Terp in double digits with 11 kills (.320), and just missed a double-double with a team-high nine digs. Smith hit .381 with nine kills and just one error, and also contributed a career-high three aces. Huddleston hit a team-high .667, had four kills and four blocks and dished out 38 assists.
Middle blocker Rachel Wagener (Chesapeake, Va.), the ACC's leader in blocks, had a team-high seven total blocks, while outside hitter Sarah Treadwell (Pearland, Texas) posted eight kills and seven digs.
The Terrapins, despite hitting just .158 in game one, managed to take a 1-0 lead with strong efforts from Wagener (four kills) and Treadwell (three kills, two blocks). In game two, the Wolfpack hit .028 and the Terps earned the 30-23 victory with help from three aces by Smith with the score tied at 23. The third game was all Terrapins as they improved their hitting percentage to .405 and pulled away from the Wolfpack, 30-17.
Junior outside hitter Jennifer Dewalt (Bethlehem, Pa.) came off the bench strong for Maria DiLivio (Hamilton, Ontario), who left the match in game two with a bruised hand. Dewalt would finish with five kills, four digs and a block.
NC State was led by freshman Julia Reis, who notched a match-high 14 kills and added nine digs and an ace. Maya Mapp also helped the Wolfpack's attack, contributing seven kills. Setter Crystal Shannon handed out 22 assists.
The Terrapins are back in action on Saturday, Oct. 11, when they take on Florida State in a 3 p.m. match at Comcast Center Gymnasium. Please note the match time and location change. The Terps will then face North Carolina at 5 p.m. in Comcast Center Gymnasium on Sunday, Oct. 12.
