The University of Maryland volleyball team (21-5, 10-2 ACC) upset No. 4 and previously unbeaten Georgia Tech, 3-2 (28-30, 24-30, 30-24, 30-28, 15-12), in front of more than 1,200 fans in Comcast Center Gymnasium Saturday night. Maryland, despite trailing two games to none, battled back to snap the Jackets' 23-match win streak and hand them their first loss of the season. With the loss, Georgia Tech falls to 23-1, 11-1 in the ACC.
Leading the Terrapins was Maria DiLivio, who drilled 20 kills (.514) and 12 digs, and Rachel Wagener, who posted a career-high 19 kills and had five blocks. Sarah Treadwell also had a double-double with 14 kills and 14 digs.
Georgia Tech appeared to be in control after taking games one (30-28) and two (30-24) behind strong efforts from Jayme Gergen and Alexandra Preiss, but Maryland benefited from the largest volleyball crowd ever in Comcast Center Gymnasium and began its outstanding comeback.
After building a 17-10 lead in game three, the Terrapins used a balanced attack to earn the 30-24 victory. Four players ended up in double-digits in the kills category - DiLivio, Wagener, Treadwell and Stephanie Smith (13 kills). The score in game four was tied ten times before the Terrapins were able to pull away and gain a 29-27 on a kill by Smith. From there, DiLivio connected on a set from Aimee Huddleston to even the match at two games apiece.
In the final game, the Terrapins only trailed once at 1-2. DiLivio had four kills in the fifth game alone, and the Terps clinched the match and the biggest upset in program history with a 15-12 victory.
Lynnsy Jones, in addition to tallying a team-high two service aces, led the team in digs with 16 and narrowly missed posting a double-double with eight kills. Aimee Huddleston put together another all-around performance, recording 62 assists, five blocks, nine digs and six kills.
Preiss led Georgia Tech with 27 kills, while Gergen finished with 19 kills and Kele Eveland dished out 78 assists.
Maryland is back in action on Thursday, Nov. 6, at NC State and Friday, Nov. 7, at North Carolina. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
