COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Nik Caner-Medley scored 19 points, and Maryland
made 31 free throws against foul-plagued Hofstra in an 87-72 victory Saturday
night.
Maryland (3-0) placed five players in double figures, including Jamar Smith,
who had 11 points and 10 rebounds - his third double-double in as many games.
John Gilchrist reached career highs in points (18) and assists (6), and
Travis Garrison had a personal-best 12 points.
Danny Walker led Hofstra (1-3) with 19 points. The Pride was called for 37
fouls and had six players foul out, including Walker.
After going a combined 11-for-20 at the foul line in their first two games,
the Terrapins made 21 free throws in the first half alone and finished
31-for-55 at the line.
Up by 13 at halftime, Maryland opened the second half with an 11-4 run to
take a 60-40 lead. The Terrapins made four foul shots during the surge,
including one by Chris McCray to complete a four-point play.
Hofstra never got closer than 10 points the rest of the way.
Maryland next gets its toughest test of the young season when No. 15
Wisconsin comes to town Tuesday to play in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
Four Hofstra starters and reserve forward Aurimas Kieza had three fouls at
halftime, and Maryland went 21-for-32 at the line in building a 49-36 lead.
The Pride got six points from Walker in racing to an early 13-4 lead, but
Hofstra soon wilted under a barrage of Maryland free throws.
The Terrapins trailed 16-11 before Caner-Medley hit a 3-pointer and four
different players made a total of seven foul shots in a 10-0 run that put the
Terrapins ahead for good.
By the midpoint of the first half, Hofstra committed 11 fouls and Maryland
was 13-for-18 at the line.
The Pride nevertheless trailed by only two points before Caner-Medley made a
layup and D.J. Strawberry added a dunk to spark an 8-0 run that made it 36-26.
