BATON ROUGE, La. - Showing the effects of a lack of quality practice time due to the severe winter weather in the Mid-Atlantic, the University of Maryland men's golf team finds itself trailing the rest of the 18-team field after one round of the 54-hole LSU Spring Invitational here.

The Terps, who averaged 292 strokes per round during the fall season, shot a 15-over 303 on the par-72 University Course located about seven miles from the LSU campus. Host LSU shares the first round lead with Lamar; both teams shot one-over 289 totals. Arkansas State (290) is in third, College of Charleston (291) is in fourth and Jacksonville (292) and South Alabama (292) are tied for fifth.

Maryland is just two strokes out of 13th place and seven strokes out of 10th.

Freshmen John Eades and Jeff Spradlin lead the Terrapin contingent after shooting opening-round scores of 74. Both are tied for 30th place. They are followed by senior co-captain John Moheyer (tie 42nd, 75), junior Tim Kane (tie 81st, 80), and sophomore Bobby MacWhinnie (tie 91st, 83).

Wixson Hufstetler of Arkansas State shot a 34-32-66 to open up a two-shot lead over South Alabama's Ryan Gildersleeve and Lamar's Shawn Stefani.

The tournament continues with rounds on Saturday and Sunday.
