WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -
University of Maryland, buoyed by the best round of the tournament, moved up four positions at the William & Mary Invitational here Tuesday to wrap up a third-place finish in the 18-team tournament at Kingsmill's River Course.
Maryland fired rounds of 305-294-310 to finish with a 54-hole total of 909, four shots out of second and 13 shots out of first. James Madison, with three players among the top 15, captured the team title with a three-round score of 896. Liberty was second with a 905.
For the third consecutive spring tournament, the Terps were led by a freshman. This time it was Jeff Spradlin, who overcame an opening-round 77 by posting back-to-back 74s on Tuesday to finish in a tie for 13th with a 54-hole total of 12-over-par 225. Junior Tim Kane finished in a tie for 21st, with a 14-over score of 227. Kane, who opened with a one-over 72 on Monday, carded rounds of 76 and 79 on Tuesday.
Other Terp finishers included junior Dan MacDonald (T-25th, 75-74-79-228), senior John Moheyer (T-37th, 81-70-80-231) and freshman John Eades (T-63rd, 83-79-78-240).
Moheyer's one-under 70 in the second round, which began on Monday but was halted due to darkness and then completed on Tuesday, matched the low score of the second round and was one of only four sub-par rounds in the entire tournament. Moheyer's second-round effort helped Maryland record the low team round (294) of the tournament.
