SPARTANBURG, S.C. -
Maryland's Tim Kane is in second place among individuals and the Terps are in a tie for third as a team after the first round of the 36-hole Wofford Invitational here.
Originally slated for 54 holes, the tournament was shortened by 18 holes due to inclement weather in the area. The tournament is being contested at the 6,585-yard, par 72 Carolina Country Club course.
Kane, a junior, fired a three-under 69 and trails East Carolina's Jason Harris by one stroke. Kane's round, which included a 33 on the back nine, was his best of the spring season. His teammate, true freshman John Eades, who has been the Terps' low man in two of three spring tournaments, is in a tie for fourth place after shooting a 71.
Other Terp scores include a 75 by Dan McDonald, a 76 by Jeff Spradlin, and a 77 by John Moheyer.
The top four teams are tightly bunched: Central Florida and East Carolina, both of which shot even-par rounds, lead Maryland and UNC-Wilmington by three shots. Old Dominion is in fifth place, nine shots back.
