University of Maryland closed out its regular season with a third-place finish at the Rutherford Invitational here Sunday, and now awaits a possible berth in the NCAA Regionals.
The Terps, who entered the tournament ranked No. 2 in their district, only strengthened their position based upon results here this weekend, and figure to be among the 81 teams invited to the NCAA Regional field when it is announced Monday, May 5.
Maryland shot a two-over-par 290 during Sunday's final round in posting its lowest score vs. par this season - a two-under 862. Host Penn State captured the title with a 12-under score of 852, eight shots ahead of runner-up Liberty University. Liberty shot a four-under 860.
All five Maryland individuals finished among the top 27, including a tie for fifth by junior Tim Kane, who followed back-to-back even-par 72s on Saturday with a three-under par 69 on Sunday. For Kane, it was his second top-five finish in the Terps' last three tournaments.
Tying for 21st place was senior co-captain John Moheyer, who carded a two-over 218 after rounds of 75, 70 and 73 across the two-day, 54-hole tournament. Three Terps finished in a tie for 27th with scores of 220 - freshman John Eades (78-69-73), junior Dan MacDonald (71-74-75) and sophomore Bobby MacWhinnie (77-66-77).
Redshirt freshman Jeff Spradlin, playing as an individual, finished in a tie for 21st with rounds of 72, 74 and 72.
Western Kentucky's Robby Shaw, who had three sub-par rounds, carded a nine-under 62 on Sunday to win the individual title by six shots over first-day leader Jim Fuller of Penn State. Shaw carded a 54-hole total of 201 to Fuller's total of 207.
