The University of Maryland women's volleyball team earned its first victory of the young season Saturday, defeating Villanova, 30-20, 30-23, 30-15, at the Maryland Invitational. The Terps are now 1-1 on the year.
Junior outside hitter Maria DiLivio (Hamilton, Ontario) continued her dominance at the net, posting a game-high 13 kills to go with nine digs and four blocks.
Senior right side hitter Lynnsy Jones (Castro Valley, Calif.) also just missed posting a double-double. She finished with 10 kills, nine digs and a block.
The Terps pressured Villanova's attack extremely well throughout the match, finishing with 16.5 total team blocks. Sophomore Stephanie Smith (Bethesda, Md.) led the defense, matching a career-high with nine blocks. Junior setter Aimee Huddleston (Keller, Texas) also matched her career-high in blocks with five and gave out 36 assists for the match.
Celine Nguyen led Villanova with six kills and four digs.
In other action from the first session, Michigan State outlasted Tennessee in a five-game thriller, 28-30, 26-30, 31-29, 30-28, 17-15.
The Maryland Invitational concludes tonight with Tennessee facing Villanova at 5 p.m. and Maryland taking on Michigan State at 7 p.m. Both games are in Comcast Center Gymnasium; admission is free.
