The University of Maryland women's volleyball team pulled out a four-game victory at the Loyola Flattop Grill Invitational Friday night, defeating host school Loyola-Chicago, 28-30, 30-28, 30-27, 30-25. The Terrapins' win streak extends to nine matches as they improve to 10-2 on the season, while the Ramblers fall to 4-7.
The Terps were forced to play catch up after dropping the first game of the match, 28-30. The Ramblers gained the 1-0 lead behind the efforts of Ashley Courtney and Lauren Holbrook. Courtney would finish with 13 kills, while Holbrook dished out 55 assists on the night.
Maryland would come back to take the second game, 30-28, behind the offensive efforts of sophomore middle blocker Stephanie Smith (Bethesda, Md.) and junior outside hitter Maria DiLivio (Hamilton, Ontario). The game was close until the very end, when senior right side hitter Lynnsy Jones (Castro Valley, Calif.) stepped to the serving line with the score tied at 28. From there, the Terps earned the two-point victory with a kill from DiLivio and a block on game point from DiLivio and Smith.
In the third game, Maryland fell behind to the Ramblers early by as many five points, but battled back to claim their first lead of the game at 25-24. They would eventually earn a 30-27 third-game win behind the defensive efforts of senior libero Fiona DeFreitas (Lanham, Md.), who provided the spark the Terrapins needed. DeFreitas finished with 12 digs.
Maryland would go on to clinch the match with a 30-25 win in the fourth game. DiLivio led all players with 15 kills, and also contributed 18 digs. Jones finished with 14 kills and 10 digs, and junior outside hitter Sarah Treadwell (Pearland, Texas) also posted a double-double with 11 kills and 18 digs. Junior setter Aimee Huddleston (Keller, Texas) handed out 53 assists for the Terps.
Maryland continues play at the Loyola Flattop Grill Invitational tomorrow, when they take on Southern Methodist at 10:30 a.m., and then Xavier at 5:00 p.m. All tournament matches are played in the Gentile Center on the campus of Loyola-Chicago.
