Volleyball Opens Tournament With Three-Game Win Over The Citadel

BOCA RATON, Fla. - The University of Maryland women's volleyball team won its first match of the Doubletree Boca Bash on the campus of Florida Atlantic University in three games Friday night, beating The Citadel, 30-10, 30-22, 30-19. The Terrapins evened their record at 2-2 for the year and will face University of South Florida and Florida Atlantic tomorrow in the tournament's final day of action.

Maryland overpowered the Bulldogs with an all-around attack, as eight players had kills for the Terps. Leading the pack was junior outside hitter Maria DiLivio (Hamilton, Ontario), who drilled a match-high 14 kills and hit .500 in leading the team to the win. In addition to DiLivio's outstanding performance, senior right side hitter Lynnsy Jones (Castro Valley, Calif.) and sophomores Rachel Wagener (Chesapeake, Va.) and Stephanie Smith (Bethesda, Md.) had an excellent outings. Jones finished with six kills (.444) and a season-high five service aces. Wagener and Smith posted seven kills each and Wagener, who hit a team-high .778 on the night, also contributed five blocks.

Junior outside hitter Sarah Treadwell (Pearland, Texas) finished with six kills and eight digs, while junior setter Aimee Huddleston (Keller, Texas) gave out 36 assists and led the team in digs with 10.

The Terrapins held a 46-26 advantage in kills and a 5-2 edge in team blocks. The squad also had a season-high 12 service aces and hit for a season-high .409.

Maryland continues play at the Doubletree Boca Bash tomorrow when they face University of South Florida at 10 a.m. They will then play the nightcap vs. host Florida Atlantic at 7 p.m.
