BOCA RATON, Fla. -
The hard-hitting combination of senior Lynnsy Jones (Castro Valley, Calif.) and junior Maria DiLivio (Hamilton, Ontario) powered the University of Maryland women's volleyball team to victory over University of South Florida at the Doubletree Boca Bash on Saturday. The Terps, now 3-2 for the season, defeated the Bulls in four games, 30-18, 28-30, 30-22, 30-19.
DiLivio and Jones once again anchored the Terps' offense and accounted for over half of the team's 67 total kills. Jones posted a team-high 18 kills and seven digs. DiLivio finished with 17 kills and ten digs.
The Terps cruised to a 30-18 win in the first game of the match, behind five kills by DiLivio and four blocks by sophomore Rachel Wagener (Chesapeake, Va.). Wagener notched eight blocks and seven kills for the match. The Bulls came back strong in game two, and pulled out a hard-fought 30-28 victory to even the match at 1-1. Leading the Bulls was outside hitter Shameka Mitchell, who finished with a match-high 19 kills.
Maryland would regroup in the third game, however, and edge the Bulls for a 30-22 win. Sophomore Stephanie Smith (Bethesda, Md.) notched three of her 11 kills in the third game, matching a career-high. Smith finished with a .458 attack percentage and six blocks.
Also posting career-best numbers was junior setter Aimee Huddleston (Keller, Texas), whose seven blocks was a personal best. Huddleston also contributed 59 assists and four kills.
In game four, the Terps trailed early, 6-10. But Jones' powerful jump serve got the Terps back into the game, as the team won eight straight points with the senior serving. It was all Maryland from there as they clinched the match with a 30-19 victory in game four.
Junior outside hitter Sarah Treadwell (Pearland, Texas) finished the match with 10 kills and 12 digs, good for a double-double.
Maryland concludes the Doubletree Boca Bash tonight when they take on host school Florida Atlantic. That match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
