The University of Maryland women's volleyball team (4-2) won its final match at the Doubletree Boca Bash en route to the tournament championship Saturday night, defeating Florida Atlantic, 3-0 (30-10, 30-16, 30-14).
Maryland's Lynnsy Jones, a senior right side hitter, was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. Against Florida Atlantic, she posted eight kills (.413) and 14 digs.
Also named to the Boca Bash's all-tournament team was junior Maria DiLivio, who notched 11 kills in the victory over the Owls. Senior libero Fiona DeFreitas (Lanham, Md.) earned the tournament's top libero honors.
With Jones serving to open the match, Maryland jumped out to a 5-0 lead. The Terps later stretched the lead to 20-7 behind the efforts of DiLivio (six kills) and Jones (five kills) and never looked back, winning the first game by a score of a 30-10. DiLivio notched three consecutive aces in the game and would finish with a total of five, a new career-high.
The Terps would clinch the match in three games winning both the second (30-16) and third (30-14) games. The squad held a 45-26 advantage in kills and a 9-3 edge in blocks for the match.
The win is Maryland's third consecutive of the season and gives them a perfect 3-0 record on the road in 2003.
The Terrapins will get a two-day rest before taking on in-state rival Towson on Tuesday, Sept. 9. That match is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
