Terps Set To Take On No. 20 Penn State

    COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The Maryland men's soccer team looks for its third win in as many games against non-conference foe Penn State on Thursday, Oct. 14, at 7 p.m., at Ludwig Field. The Terps will then travel to Blacksburg, Va., to face ACC newcomer Virginia Tech on Sunday, Oct. 17.

    The Terps continue to be among the leaders in the nation and the ACC in several categories. Maryland's 3.36 goals per game is second in the country. Jason Garey leads the ACC and is second in the country in points per game (2.73), with Abe Thompson ranking second in the conference and eighth in the nation in that category (2.27). Garey is sixth in the nation in goals per game (1.00), while Thompson is 11th (0.91). Garey and Michael Dello-Russo are fourth in the country with 0.73 assists per game, and Domenic Mediate is 14th in that category with 0.64.

    Maryland has won its last two games, both at Ludwig Field.

    The Nittany Lions hold a 17-16-0 edge in the all-time series, although the Terps won last year's meeting 1-0 in Hershey, Pa. Sumed Ibrahim scored the game-winner off a Seth Stammler corner kick in the 67th minute.

    Maryland leads the all-time series with the Hokies, 2-0. The two teams have not met since the 1985 season when the Terps defeated Virginia Tech, 6-0.

    Game notes: Maryland vs. Penn State

  • Maryland has won its last three against the Nittany Lions. Head coach Sasho Cirovski is 3-0 against Penn State.
  • Terp head coach Sasho Cirovski turns 42 on Oct. 14. At Maryland, Cirovski is 3-0-1 on his birthday.
  • The ACC is 2-2-2 against the Big Ten this season. Penn State notched ties against ACC schools North Carolina and Wake Forest to open the season.
  • The Nittany Lions scored more goals against Maryland than any other opponent in school history in 1952 when they defeated the Terps 11-0. That is also the largest margin of defeat in school history for Maryland.
  • Penn State is 1-1-1 on the road this year. The Terps are 5-1 at home this season. The Nittany Lions are 1-0-1 at Ludwig Fied this season after playing in the Maryland/adidas Classic earlier this season.
  • The Terps are 1-1 against ranked opponents this season.

    Terp Tidbits

  • The Terps snapped their four-game winless streak with victories over Villanova and ACC rival North Carolina. The win over the Tar Heels was Maryland's first conference win of the season.
  • Maryland's 1-0 win over North Carolina was its first in a game decided by one goal. It also was the first shutout for Maryland in five games, its longest shutout drought since the 2001 season.
  • With the shutout against North Carolina, Noah Palmer now needs just two more shutouts to be the school's all-time leader in that category. He has 26 for his career, just one shy of tying Dom Macina's record of 27.
  • Domenic Mediate's game-winner against North Carolina was his first this season and the ninth of his career. Abe Thompson and Stephen King lead the team this year with two game-winners each.
  • David Glaudemans got his first career start against North Carolina. Glaudemans played left back, while Michael Dello-Russo moved over to the right back spot.
  • Abe Thompson's assist against the Wildcats gives him 23 for his career, moving him into fifth all-time on the Maryland career list in that category. The assist also gives Thompson 107 points for his career, making him just three shy of surpassing Eberhard Klein (109 points) as the all-time career leader.
  • Several Terps are on the verge of cracking the top 10 single season charts at Maryland. Jason Garey needs just two more points for a tie in 10th place on the single-season points chart, and three more goals to be tied for 10th for goals in a season. Garey and Michael Dello-Russo need just one more assist to make the top 10 for assists, while Domenic Mediate can get there with two more.
  • Through 10 games Maryland has scored 36 goals. There have been 20 seasons in Maryland history when the Terps did not score that many goals.

    Scouting Penn State

  • Penn State enters Thursday's contest with a 5-2-5 record. The five ties for the Nittany Lions are tied for the most in school history. Penn State had five ties in 1986.
  • Penn State is winless in its last four outings with two losses and a pair of ties.
  • In Penn State's most recent outing against Wisconsin, the Nittany Lions surrendered the game-winning goal with under a minute to play to drop a 4-3 decision to the Badgers. The Badgers are coached by former Terp assistant Jeff Rohrman.
  • The four goals scored by Wisconsin were the most allowed by Penn State this season.
  • Chad Severs leads PSU with eight goals and two assists for 18 points. Severs has three game-winning goals on the year.
  • Simon Omekanda gives Penn State a spark off the bench. He is tied for the team lead with four assists, and is second on the team in points with 10.
  • Conrad Taylor has played every minute in goal for the Nittany Lions this year. He has three shutouts ont he season to go with a GAA of 1.32. He's made 41 saves compared to 18 goals allowed.
  • Penn State is coached by Barry Gorman, who is in 17th year at the helm of the Nittany Lion program. His current record at Penn State is 219-112-26, and the Nittany Lions have won two Big Ten titles and gone to 10 NCAA Tournaments during his tenure.
