  • Game Notes vs. Virginia

COLLEGE PARK - The sixth-ranked Maryland Terrapins close the season on the road when they take on No. 10 Virginia Friday night at Klockner Stadium.

Maryland (12-4-1) comes into the game having won five straight and seven of the last eight, including a 2-0 win over Clemson on Sunday. Virginia (14-3-0) had its nine-game winning streak snapped last Saturday when Virginia Tech upset the `Hoos 2-1 in Blacksburg, Va.

Maryland leads the all-time series 31-23-7, including a 1-0 win during the regular season last year that allowed the Terps to clinch the ACC regular season title. However, the Terps and Cavs met in the ACC Tournament finals, where the two teams played to a scoreless tie. Virginia prevailed in the penalty kick shootout (7-6) to take the ACC crown.

The Terps have not defeated Virginia in Charlottesville since 1996, when the Terps defeated UVa 2-0 for the ACC Tournament title. Maryland has not won a regular season game at UVa since 1990 (the two teams did tie in the 1996 meeting in Charlottesville).

Terp head coach Sasho Cirovski is 4-9-4 against the `Hoos.

Maryland is 3-2 against ranked opponents, including two straight. UVa is 3-1 against ranked opponents, having lost only to Saint Louis back in September.

The Terps won two games at Klockner Stadium earlier this season when they captured the Nike/Virginia Classic. Maryland defeated Long Island 5-0 and Marshall 6-0 to open the season.

Up Next: The Terps will travel to Cary, N.C., for the ACC Tournament. The tournament seedings and game times will be announced on Monday, Nov. 8.

Jason Garey Named ACC Player of the Week

  • Maryland junior forward Jason Garey was named ACC Player of the Week for the second time this season after scoring all of Maryland's goals in the Terps' two wins last week.
  • Garey scored all four Maryland goals as the Terrapins registered a pair of 2-0 victories over Bucknell and conference-foe Clemson in College Park. The junior forward leads the Terps in goals scored (16), assists (9), points (41) and shots (56) this season. Garey, a native of Gonzalez, La., is tied for seventh at Maryland for goals in a season and became just the sixth athlete in Terrapin history to have 40 or more points in a single season.

Garey, Noah Palmer Named To National Teams of the Week

  • Senior goalkeeper Noah Palmer was named to the CollegeSoccerNews.com national team of the week on Monday, Nov. 1.
  • Palmer recorded back-to-back shutouts against Bucknell and Clemson, making seven saves on the week.
  • His shutout against the Bison on Oct. 26 was the 28th of his career, a school record.
  • Garey was named to the Soccer America Team of the Week following his four-goal performance against Clemson and Bucknell.

Garey, Mediate Honored for Academic Achievement

The Difference Is In The "D"

  • The Terp defense has returned to its stifling form. The back line of Michael Dello-Russo, Kenney Bertz, Chris Lancos, David Glaudemans, along with midfielder Ian Rodway and reserve Eric Brunner, has frustrated opposing offenses and given Maryland offensive chances by possessing the ball.
  • In the last five games, the Terps are giving up just 0.40 goals per game. Maryland is forcing its opponents to make great individual efforts in those game, allowing just one assist during that span and Palmer has three shutouts during that span.

    Last Year vs. Virginia

  • Maryland and UVa played twice last season, with the Terps winning the first meeting and the Cavs prevailing in the ACC Finals in penalty kicks.
  • In the first meeting, defense was the name of the game as the Terps' strong backline play made Jason Garey's first-half goal stand up for a 1-0 victory in front of 2,245 vocal Ludwig Field fans.
  • The Terps dominated offensive possession throughout most of the game, outshooting the Wahoos 20-8.
  • At the ACC Tournament, Maryland controlled most of the action in the first half, outshooting Virginia by a decisive 8-1 margin.
  • Maryland broke a scoreless tie in the 46th minute when Chris Lancos sent a ball into the box for Garey, but the ball made contact with Will Hall's hand, giving A.J. Herrera a penalty kick. Herrera converted the kick into the left side of the net giving Maryland a 1-0 lead.
  • Down a score, Virginia started to send more players onto its attack. The pressure paid off and the Cavs got back into the game when Maryland failed to clear the ball on a corner kick. Virginia's John Hartman one-timed the ball through traffic from 18 yards out and skipped the ball past Maryland's Noah Palmer.
  • With Virginia gaining momentum, the Terps suffered another setback when Kenney Bertz was handed his second yellow card of the match and was ejected.
  • After two scoreless overtime periods, the match moved into a five-round penalty kick shootout. Trailing 3-2 and needing a conversion to extend the match, Maryland's Sumed Ibrahim got his shot past Burke to send the match into a sudden-death shootout. After four conversions by Virginia and three for Maryland, Burke was able to stop Scott Buete's shot into the lower left corner to end the match and give the Cavs the win, 7-6 in PK's (in nine rounds).
