Men's Soccer: Day 10 In Scotland

Aug. 26, 2004

GLASGOW, SCOTLAND--

9:30 a.m. - The Terps get to sleep in a bit, and have breakfast around 9:30. The scrambled eggs are a bit more watery than usual today, which is appropriate as drizzle falls most of the morning.

10:15-11 a.m.-- The team goes through a light jog/stretch in preparation for today's final game.

11 a.m.-12:30 p.m.-- All is quiet at the University of Glagow dorms. There isn't even much activity in the TV room, with the exception of those getting treatment. It's been a very slow morning, which is good because the squad is run down from all the games, and at the same time, still needs to prepare for one more.

2-4:30 p.m.-- For the last time on the trip, it's game time.

Maryland 1, Kilmarnock FC Reserves 3
GLASGOW, SCOTLAND - Kilmarnock used a patient and opportunistic style of play to score a pair of early first half goals and held off a tough Maryland rally in the second half to win 3-1, on a cold and rainy Thursday afternoon.

The Kilmarnock reserves featured several first team players and several competing for spots in front of their head coach who was in attendance. The Terps finish the trip 3-2.

The Terps played without Domenic Mediate and Ian Rodway, who were resting because they had played most of the minutes in the team's first four games. The Terps started Chris Lancos, Kenney Bertz, David Glaudemans and Eric Brunner in the back, Maurice Edu, Jason Arnold, Spencer Darman Allen and A.J. Godbolt in the midfield, and Erwin Diaz and Abe Thompson up front. Craig Salvati got his second start in goal on the trip.

Kilmarnock got off to a fast start, not allowing the Terps any offensive opportunities and possessing the ball in their own half. Within the first five minutes, a Kilmarnock player drove in deep on the touch line and sent a cross that hit a Terp player and went into the net for the early score.

The Terps were unable to regroup quickly, and Kilmarnock continued to dictate the pace of play, although the team did not take a lot of shots. On just its second shot of the day roughly 30 minutes into the game, Kilmarnock found its second goal when a Kilmarnock player received a chip pass from the middle of the field and got a shot over top a charging Salvati for the score.

After halftime, the Terps were able to generate some offense and created several chances. Aki Kadotani was taken down in the box in the first 15 minutes of the second half, and Jason Garey was able to convert the penalty kick to cut the score in half, 2-1.

Maryland was able to continue to pressure and attack, and created several good scoring chances. Diaz hit the crossbar on a header, a pair of Garey shots were saved by excellent play by the Kilmarnock keeper and free kick by Lancos just sailed left of the net.

Kilmarnock finished the game on a nice give-and-go on the left side of the box that found the back of the net for the score.

Scoring: KFC (own goal); KFC; MD-Garey (penalty kick); KFC
Shots:-- MD-1+9=10; KFC-4+2=6
Saves: MD-1+0=1; KFC-0+4=4
Corners: MD-2+3=5; KFC-2+0=2
Fouls: MD-5+3=8; KFC-12+3=15

Notes: The rain began to pour almost as soon as the ball was kicked off. With the wind and the rain, the Terps played in November-like conditions, with the temperatures likely in the low 50s, perhaps feeling colder with the elements. During the game, one linesman had a jumpy offsides flag, in which he raised it almost at every opportunity, no matter if the person was involved in the play or not, or even if the player was offsides or not - and playing at the University of Glasgow, this was supposed to be a home game for the Terps!

5:30-6:30 p.m. - Not one of the stronger showings by the dining hall, dinner consists of chicken and rice or lasagna. Again, the staff is stingy with some portions, as they are expecting more patrons later on.

8:30 p.m.-- The team has some leisure time, and some most spend it watching the Olympics on television while some play cards in the library. Some get treatment on their injuries while they watch, and pizzas from Domino's come later to help tide over their appetites. With the games out of the way, there is relief amongst the team, and after an early training session tomorrow, they should be able to enjoy the rest of their stay in Scotland.
