TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -
The University of Maryland softball team dropped a game to host and No. 6/8 Alabama, 7-0, at the Crimson Classic Friday afternoon in Tuscaloosa. The Terps were led offensively by sophomore second baseman Keri Lounge, who went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double. It was the 12th-straight victory for Alabama, while Maryland falls to 0-2 on the year.
Lounge's double, one of four Maryland hits on the day, came in the second inning. However, Alabama starter Jennifer Wright was able to strike out the next two batters to preserve a scoreless tie.
Alabama capitalized on two Terrapin fielding errors and an RBI single by Ashley Courtney in its half of the second inning and took a 3-0 lead.
The Crimson Tide added four runs in the fifth inning on four hits, including a solo home run by Courtney.
Terp senior Crystal Tweedy hit an infield single and advanced to second base on a throwing error by `Bama second baseman Leah White in the top of the sixth, and Lounge hit a single up the middle in the top of the seventh and advanced to second on a fielder's choice, but the Terrapins could not capitalize and fell by a final score of 7-0.
Terp starter Elyse Lucas (0-1) pitched six innings and had three strikeouts.
Maryland faces Penn State at noon Saturday at the Alabama Softball Stadium to complete round robin play at the Crimson Classic. Following the 2:30 matchup between host Alabama and Missouri, seedings will be set and bracket play will begin at 5 p.m. Check www.umterps.com for updates.
