The University of Maryland softball team came away with a 2-1 victory over Florida A&M Saturday afternoon at the Florida State Invitational. Natalie Grossman drove in both Maryland runs with her first double of the season and Jessica Aditays earned her first complete game victory of the year.
With the win, Maryland improved to 6-7 on the year, while Aditays' record went to 1-2. The senior pitcher struck out eight batters in the seven-inning effort.
Florida A&M earned its only run of the game in the top of the first inning, but Grossman's double in the bottom of the second gave Maryland the 2-1 lead that held up. Lindsay Klein doubled in the third inning and had a second hit up the middle in the sixth, but Maryland wasn't able to put any more runs on the board. Crystal Rizzuto had the Terps' other hit, extending her hit streak to three games.
Florida A&M had a chance to tie the game in the top of the seventh inning after a Danielle Brown double to right-center field. With two outs later in the inning, Monique Mattingly hit a single to left field that advanced Brown to third. Brown was held at third because of a great defensive play by Terp left fielder Crystal Tweedy to keep the ball in front of her.
Maryland has now won six-straight games over Florida A&M and is 2-1 at the 2005 Florida State Invitaitonal.
