COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland softball team dropped a 1-0 game to North Carolina Saturday at the Terrapin Softball Complex. Jessica Young's RBI double in the top of the first inning gave North Carolina its slim one-run lead which held up for the rest of the game. In the second game of the doubleheader, the teams were tied 2-2 when play was halted due to heavy rain. The remainder of that game, along with the finale of the series, will be played starting at noon Sunday.

Crystal Crews (4-5) pitched a complete game for the Terrapins, giving up four hits and one run while striking out four. Crystal Cox (17-14) got the win, giving up just two hits in the complete game shutout.

Marissa May reached base with a one-out walk in the first inning and advanced to third base on a Terrapin fielding error after stealing second base. Jessica Young doubled to right field to score May and put Carolina up, 1-0.

Maryland threatened in its half of the first inning, as Jenny Belak earned a lead-off walk and Lindsay Klein blasted her seventh double of the year to right-center field. The Terps failed to capitalize on the scoring opportunity, however, as Keri Lounge popped up a bunt to the pitcher and Belak was doubled up at third base.

Crystal Tweedy had the other Maryland hit of the day, a single to left field in the fifth inning, but North Carolina prevailed by a final score of 1-0.

Keri Lounge's fourth home run of the year gave the Terrapins their first runs of the day in the second game of the doubleheader, but the Tar Heels came back and tied the game at 2-2 before rain forced the contest to be halted in the top of the seventh inning.

The second game will be resumed Sunday at noon, followed by game three of the series.
