COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The Maryland softball team extended its win streak to eight games with two non-conference victories over Delaware State Wednesday at the Terrapin Softball Complex. Lindsay Klein hit two home runs and Keri Lounge added another to lead the Terps to 10-1 and 5-1 wins, and the team improved to 7-1 on its home field in 2005.
Jessica Aditays picked up the win in game one, improving her record to 5-2 on the year. Aditays struck out eight and allowed five hits in the six-inning Terp victory.
Delaware State took its first and only lead of the afternoon in the top of the third inning during the first game of the doubleheader. That lead did not last long, however, as Jenny Belak started the Terrapin half of the third with a single up the middle and Nneka Cardoza followed with a bunt single. After Lindsay Klein was hit by a pitch, Keri Lounge stepped up and hit a two-run single to left field to give the Terps a 2-1 lead. Nikki Smith continued the Terp rally with an RBI single that scored Klein and Lauren Pollock and Natalie Grossman contributed RBI sacrifice flies to give Maryland a commanding 5-1 lead.
Belak and Cardoza each got their second hits of the day in the fourth inning, as Belak knocked her first career triple to right field and Cardoza hit an RBI single. After Lindsay Klein reached base on a fielder's choice, Keri Lounge blasted her third home run of the year, a two-run shot, over the fence in left field. Lounge finished game one 2-for-2 at the plate with four RBI and two runs.
Leading 8-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Lindsay Klein ended the game with a two-run home run of her own to give the Terps the 10-1 victory. For Klein, it was her third home run of the year.
In game two, Terp starter Crystal Crews was working a no-hitter through five and two-thirds innings while the Terrapin offense was again being productive.
Crystal Rizzuto gave Maryland an early 1-0 lead with an RBI single in the second inning, and the Terps extended their lead on an RBI triple by Nneka Cardoza in the fifth inning. That same inning, Lindsay Klein hit a towering home run to center field. The two-run shot, Klein's fourth of the year and 10th of her career, put Maryland (18-10, 2-1 ACC) up 4-0.
Crews' bid for a no-hitter was ended in the sixth inning on a double by Hornet second baseman Ashley Schaaf, but Maryland tacked on a run in the sixth inning to take the final lead of 5-1.
Crews improved to 3-2 and allowed one hit while striking out four.
Cardoza finished game two 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run, while Lauren Pollock also added two hits and a run.
The Terps return to action this weekend in a three-game series at Virginia.
