BRONX, N.Y. - Freshman Maggie Schmelzle had 12 kills to lead the University of Maryland to a 30-26, 30-25, 30-23 sweep over Central Connecticut State on Friday in the opening game of the Rose Hill Classic hosted by Fordham University.

The victory pushed the Terrapins to a perfect 7-0 record early in the season. Maryland will play St. Peter's and host Fordham in matches on Saturday, shooting for their third straight tournament title.

Beth Gillming led Maryland defensively with 15 digs and eight kills, while Stephanie Doiron had 10 digs. Stephanie Smith and Rachel Wagener each had five blocks, as the Terps held a 10-1 edge in blocks in the match.

Teryn Papp and Tedi Doucet each had 19 assists for the Terps.

Maryland held a 23-17 lead in the first game, but CCSU rallied to tie the game at 25-25. At 26-26, the Terps took advantage of an attack error to gain the serve, then Doiron served out the game with the aid of kills from Gillming and Jade Brown.

The Terrapins held leads of 10-7, 16-8, 20-10 and 25-13 in the second game before Central Connecticut got its offense going. CCSU pulled within 27-23 but the Terps were able to withstand the rally and finish off the victory.

In the third and final game, Maryland scored nine straight points to take a 16-7 lead. The Terps led by at least seven points the rest of the way, completing the three-game sweep.

It was Maryland's fifth three-game sweep so far this season, and the Terps are unbeaten in opening games of matches in 2005.
