Terps Sweep St. Peter's in Volleyball

BRONX, N.Y. - Beth Gillming and Rachel Wagener each finished with 11 kills, while Stephanie Smith added seven blocks as the University of Maryland won its eighth straight match with a sweep over St. Peter's College Saturday at the Rose Hill Classic.

The Terrapins, now 8-0 overall, were to face host Fordham University later on Saturday in their last match of the tournament.

Stephanie Doiron led Maryland with 14 digs, as the Terrapins dominated the match, 30-12, 30-13 and 30-11.

In the first game, Maryland built a 12-4 lead and steadily continued to build on the advantage throughout. Tedi Doucet served the final five points of the first game, with the last three points coming on kills by Gillming.

St. Peter's led 6-5 in the second game before Doucet came again to the service line and reeled off nine straight points. Maryland led 22-10 before Jade Brown got hot at the net, getting four kills and a block in a six-point run.

Game three had the Terps take a 5-4 lead before scoring 10 straight points. The lead grew to 25-10 before Maryland finished off the victory.

The Rose Hill Classic is the third straight tournament to open the season for Maryland, which begins its Atlantic Coast Conference schedule on Tuesday evening at home against Boston College.
