Sophomore Beth Gillming had a dozen kills, while Jade Brown and Mary Beth Brown added 10 each as the University of Maryland volleyball team ran its record to 11-0 with a three-game sweep of Florida State in an Atlantic Coast Conference match on Friday played before 667 at the Comcast Center Pavilion.
The Terrapins swept the Seminoles 30-17, 30-15 and 30-23. Maryland has matched its fifth-best start in school history with its 11th straight win to open the season, and improved its ACC mark to 2-0. The Seminoles fell to 2-7 overall after dropping their league-opener.
Maryland hit a strong .361 in the match, including having 20 kills and only five errors in the third game en route to a .395 hitting percentage. Mary Beth Brown, a redshirt freshman, had a season-high 10 kills without an error in 18 attempts.
Rachel Wagener and Stephanie Smith led the Terps with four blocks each, while three Terps had nine digs, including Maggie Schmelzle, who had three aces. Teryn Papp had 23 assists for Maryland.
For Florida State, Kristen Rust finished with 10 kills and Andreza Santos had nine kills and four blocks. Makini Thompson had five blocks to lead the FSU defense, with Seminole setter Jessica Skower dishing out 27 assists.
Maryland trailed 7-4 in game one when Gillming picked up a kill for the Terps. She then went to the service line and scored six straight points, including a pair of aces, to put the Terps up 11-7. After a Seminole point, Maryland extended the lead to 15-8 on Stephanie Smith's serve. The lead grew to 20-10 and 26-14 before Jade Brown ended the opening game with a kill.
Tedi Doucet had a six-point run at the service line for Maryland early in game two, putting the Terrapins ahead 10-4. Maryland padded the lead to 19-8 on a kill from Gillming, then continued to use its efficient offense to extend the lead to 23-11, 26-13 and 28-14 before finishing the game on an ace by Schmelzle.
Maryland led the third game 12-8 before the Seminoles pulled even at 14-14. FSU led 18-17 when the Terps went on a seven-point run, including three kills by Jade Brown. After a block by Wagener and Jade Brown, Maryland pushed the lead to 27-19 on another block by Wagener. Gillming and Smith each had a kill down the stretch as the Terps finished off the win.
The Terrapins end a three-match homestand on Sunday when Miami comes to Comcast Pavilion for a match at 1 p.m.
