Terps Remain Perfect Behind Gillming

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Beth Gillming posted a double-double with 14 kills and 14 digs as Maryland extended its undefeated record to 12-0, outlasting Miami in a 3-1 (30-24, 30-21, 26-30, 30-25) Atlantic Coast Conference volleyball victory at home Sunday.

The win kept Maryland first in the ACC at 3-0 in conference matches.

The Terps, off to their fifth-best start in season history, have won 18 of their last 19 matches in a streak dating back to last season. The Terps finished their three-game homestand against the Hurricanes before a crowd of 489.

Miami is now 6-4 overall and 1-1 in the ACC.

Stephanie Smith and Jade Brown led the Terrapins with 16 kills each for the match. Smith had five kills in the first game. Stephanie Doiron led Maryland with 15 digs, while Smith led the team with six blocks and Jade Brown had five.

Miami's top offensive player Karla Johnson had seven kills in the first game and finished the match with 15. Francheska Savage also had 15 kills for the Hurricanes, while Ciara Michel had 14. Ann Gallo finished with 16 digs for Miami.

Maryland was tied with Miami briefly in the first game at 2-2, but overpowered the Hurricanes and led the remainder of the game. The Terps led at 11-7, 17-13 and 27-19, when the Terps lost five straight points before Stephanie Smith answered back with a kill to end the streak at 27-23. Maryland went on to win 30-24.

A confident Maryland team came out in the second game with a 7-1 lead with two kills by Jade Brown and key blocking by Rachel Wagener and Maggie Schmelze. The Terps' momentum continued, building the lead to 20-10 before Miami fell 30-21.

Miami's team sparked in the third game and tested Maryland's defense. The teams traded key points with nine ties in the game before Miami pulled ahead 28-25 to take control of the game before prevailing at 30-26.

The fourth game proved to be an equal contest, as the Hurricanes showed their offense was not ready to give up and lurched ahead 22-18. After a Maryland timeout, the Terps came together defensively in the fourth game with strong passing and some key blocking by Jade Brown.

Kills by Wagener and Gillming brought the Terps back in the lead at 24-23 and continued with an ace by libero Stephanie Doiron and a kill by Mary Beth Brown to 28-25. The Terps won the final 30-25 on a block by Mary Beth Brown and Stephanie Smith.

Maryland continues its schedule on the road when it plays four matches, beginning with Virginia Tech on Friday, September 30th. The Terps will return home on October 14th.
