COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland men's basketball team will host a public scrimmage, while the women's basketball squad will open its practice session on Saturday, October 28 prior to the Terps' nationally televised football contest against Florida State University. The women's team will take the floor at 2:00 p.m., while the men will tip-off their scrimmage at 3:30 p.m. All Maryland students and fans are welcome to Comcast Center.
Fans must have a parking pass for the football game in order to park on campus for the scrimmages.
The reigning champions have been picked No. 1 in numerous preseason polls. Fifth-year head coach Brenda Frese and her Terps return their top eight scorers from last year's championship squad, including all five starters. Among the returning players are All-Americans Crystal Langhorne and senior All-ACC performer Shay Doron.
Maryland's only exhibition game before opening the 2006-07 campaign is on Thursday, November 2, when they host LTL All-Stars. The official start of the season will be at Middle Tennessee State on Friday, Nov. 10, before returning to Comcast Center for the home opener against George Mason on Sunday, Nov. 12.
The men's program returns eight letterwinners and six seniors from last year's squad. Head coach Gary Williams, the school's all-time winningest coach, has brought in five talented newcomers for 2006-07. The team is looking to extend its streak of 13 consecutive postseason appearances.
The men's team will open the season when they host California (Pa.) in an exhibition game on November 1 at Comcast Center. Maryland's first regular season contest is scheduled for November 7 when the Terrapins host Hampton in the opening round of the 2006 2K Sports College Hoops Classic.
