COLLEGE PARK, Md. - University of Maryland men's basketball coach Gary Williams announced today (October 3) that freshman forward Jerome Burney (Atlanta, Ga./Westlake HS) will be sidelined four to six weeks. He suffered a fracture to a small bone in his left foot. The injury does not require surgery, and he is expected to join the Terps' practices in a few weeks.
"We expect Jerome to make a full recovery and return to the rotation as quickly as possible," said Williams.
The Atlanta, Ga., native finished his career at Westlake High School as the school's all-time leader in blocked shots (570) and posted 15 double-doubles. Burney led the Lions to a 32-1 record and a runner-up finish in the state Class 4A Championships. He was named Second Team Class 4A All-State by the Atlanta Journal Constitution.
The Terrapins raise the curtain on the 2006-07 season when they host Maryland Madness, Friday, October 13. The Terps' first exhibition contest is slated for November 1, when they host California (Pa.).
