COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) -Mike Jones sank all five of his 3-point shots in the opening four minutes and finished with a career-high 29 points, leading Maryland to a 91-50 rout of Mount St. Mary's on Thursday night.
Jones nearly outscored the Mountaineers in the first half, totalling 22 points on 7-for-12 shooting to stake the Terrapins (12-2) to a 55-24 lead.
D.J. Strawberry matched his career high with 20 points and freshman Greivis Vasquez had 9 points, eight rebounds and eight assists for Maryland, which improved to 6-0 against its in-state foe. The Terrapins' average margin of victory in the lopsided series is 32 points.
Chris Vann and Kelly Beidler had 12 points apiece for Mount St. Mary's (2-10). It was the final non-league game of the season for the Mountaineers, who play in the Northeast Conference.
Jones had six points in only 66 seconds and 15 with 16:12 left in the first half. He finished 10-for-21 overall and made 7 of 13 attempts from 3-point range.
With Jones leading the way, Maryland went up 15-1 before the Mountaineers made their first field goal - with nearly eight minutes elapsed. The Mount missed 19 of its first 22 shots from the floor and trailed 36-9 with 7:39 left in the first half.
The Terrapins shot 60 percent before halftime and played hard on the other end as well, limiting the Mountaineers to 27 percent shooting (9-for-33).
At that point, the only mystery surrounding the game was whether Jones would eclipse his career-high of 27 points and break his own school record of nine 3-pointers in a game, set on Dec. 13 in a blowout win over Missouri-Kansas City.
Jones reached 29 points with a reverse layup with 13:56 left to put the Terps up 70-31.
