Calkin Leads Terps in Spring Golf Opener

MIAMI, Fla. - Sophomore Kelly Calkin of the University of Maryland shot a final-round 74 Tuesday to finish with an even-par total of 219 and place third individually at the Pat Bradley Women's Golf Championship hosted by Florida International University.

As a team, Maryland shot a 305 on Tuesday for a 915 total and a fifth-place finish. The Terrapins started the day tied with Washington State for fifth, but beat the Cougars by a shot on Tuesday to claim the spot.

The Terps' final team score of 915 was 42 shots better than at this tournament a year ago.

Calkin stayed consistent throughout the three rounds at the Miccosukee Golf and Country Club, shooting 73-72-74. Her 219 total for the 54-hole event was the best of her career and the top-5 finish was her second as a Terrapin.

Also for Maryland, junior Kelly MacWhinnie tied for 13th with a 226 total after shooting a 77 on Tuesday. Three of MacWhinnie's four top-20 finishes in her career have come during the 2005-06 season.

Kate Stepanek tied for 45th at 236 after closing with a 79 in the final round, Jessica Reno had a 76 to tie for 48th at 237 and Katie Trotter shot 78 in the final round to tie for 60th at 240.

Stacey Tate of Memphis won the individual title with a 214 total, rallying Tuesday with a 68 that was the best round of the tournament by any player. First-day leader Lisbeth Meineke of Georgia State was second at 215.

Augusta State shot a 298 in the final round for an 897 total and held off Brigham Young by one stroke. Georgia State and host Florida International tied for third at 908.

Maryland plays next March 12 through 14 at the Pinehurst Challenge.
