WASHINGTON, D.C. -
Maryland's field hockey, men's soccer and women's basketball teams were among the 12 college national championship teams honored Thursday at the White House by President George W. Bush. Emily Beach (field hockey), David Glaudemans (men's soccer) and Crystal Langhorne (women's basketball) each presented President Bush with a gift during a reception in the South Lawn.
Maryland was the only school to have three teams honored. Auburn had two sports honored with its men's and women's swimming and diving teams.
"We have three teams today from the great state of Maryland," President Bush said during the reception. "Perhaps one theme of Champion's Day is: Fear the Turtle."
Prior to the reception, the teams met the president and had a photo taken with him inside the White House. Following the reception, several Congressmen from Maryland joined the team for photos.
Joining the Maryland teams at the White House were: Florida men's basketball, Washington volleyball, Portland women's soccer, Wisconsin's men's cross country team, Stanford's women's cross country team, Colorado's skiing team, the United States Military Academy's rifle team and Auburn's men's and women's swimming and diving teams.
