Men's Soccer Takes On DC United On FSC

April 7, 2006

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland men's soccer team spring game against the DC United Reserves will be televised live on Fox Soccer Channel this Sunday, April 9, at 7 p.m. The game will be played at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Germantown, Md., as part of the SHUT-OUT Cancer College Classic.

Maryland has tied its two previous spring games, drawing against Wisconsin (1-1) and Virginia Beach (2-2).

"We have purposefully put together a tough spring schedule to help us prepare for next fall," head coach Sasho Cirovski said. "We are trying to get our players used to playing in pressure situations."

The game is a culmination of the annual KICKS Against Breast Cancer College Tournament and SHUT-OUT Cancer College Classic. Twenty-two of the top men and women's collegiate soccer teams are scheduled to participate on Sunday, with the action beginning at 9 a.m. The Fox Soccer Channel will also be televising a women's game between Virginia and the Washington Freedom at 5 p.m. before Maryland's contest against DC United,

Proceeds from the events will be split between the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults and the Howard County General Hospital's Claudia Mayer Cancer Resource and Image Center in Columbia, Maryland, both non-profit organizations supporting individuals affected by cancer.

The KICKS Against Breast Cancer College Tournament was established in honor of Claudia Mayer, a friend of tournament Director Louise Waxler (WUSA/Washington Freedom) who passed away in 1996 after a two-year battle with breast cancer. Since the inception of the tournament nine years ago, donations and fundraising by participating teams has totaled more than $350,000. The SHUT-OUT Cancer Men's College Soccer Classic was added last year with additional proceeds to benefit the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults.
