COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 3 Maryland women's lacrosse team improved to 5-0 with a 19-6 win against Brown on March 10 at the Lacrosse & Field Hockey Complex. Four Terrapins recorded hat tricks on the day led by senior Krista Pellizzi with five goals and an assist and junior Katie Princiotto with three goals and three assists.
Maryland controlled the game throughout, allowing just nine shots in each half while peppering the Brown goalie with 54 total shots. The Terp defense shutdown the Bears attack at the end of the game as Brown went the last 21:28 without scoring a goal.
Junior Lauren Cohen dished out a career high four assists on the day to help the Maryland cause. Senior Katie Doolittle and junior Dana Dobbie both added a hat trick as well. Juniors Kelly Kasper and Katie Pumphrey were both credited with four caused turnovers.
Maryland jumped out to a 3-0 lead and held that advantage until Brown scored its first goal with 14 minutes left in the first half. Doolittle scored the game's first goal on a free position and then Pellizzi posted two of her goals in the opening run.
Meghan Markowski got the Bears on the board at the 14:01 mark when she converted a free position to make it 3-1. The Terps responded emphatically, however, and went on a decisive six goal run during the next five minutes. Freshman Amanda Spinnenweber started the Maryland rally when she put a Princiotto pass into the back of the net. Princiotto also scored the next Terps goal and assisted on the third of the run.
Brown fought back before the halftime whistle as it scored the last three goals of the frame to cut the deficit to 9-4. Molly McCarthy had a hand in two of the goals with a goal and an assist.
The Bears sliced into the lead even more after the half as Ali Holland recorded a free position goal to make it 9-5 just three minutes in. Pellizzi and Princiotto recorded two more scores for the Terps before Holland scored again for Brown to cut the deficit to 11-6 with 21:28 to go.
The Maryland defense buckled down after that goal and held Brown scoreless the rest of the way as the Terps ran away with the win. Dobbie scored her three goals in the span of four minutes to propel the offense to the game-ending 7-0 streak. Five different Terps tallied the final goals including sophomore Jenny Collins who recorded her first career tally at Maryland.
For Brown (1-3), McCarthy had a goal and two assists while Holland added two goals. Melissa King performed well in the cage as she was credited with 15 saves.
Maryland (5-0) is on the road for a pair of games next week as it travels to Virginia on March 13 and then Dartmouth on March 17. Both the Cavaliers and the Big Green are ranked No. 7 in the country.
