Maryland and Georgetown Set for Rematch Wednesday

April 11, 2007

College Park, Md. - The Maryland Terrapins welcome the Georgetown Hoyas to College Park on Wednesday for a mid-week doubleheader starting at 4 p.m. The games will be a rematch of the teams' March 28 meeting, in which the Terps took two games from the Hoyas with scores of 6-5 and 6-0. Maryland plays Georgetown four times this season, more than any other school.

The Hoyas (8-29) challenged the Terps (22-15) in game one, taking a 4-1 lead on Samantha Peters' grand slam home run. But Maryland rallied to tie the game behind relief pitcher Abbey Welch's clutch hitting and pitching in the seventh inning. Welch finished with two runs, four hits and two RBIs on the day.

Stacey Jennings ensured the Terps had no such problems in game two. After walking her first batter, Jennings caught fire in the circle, retiring the next 21 Hoyas she faced to earn her second no-hitter of the season.

Amber Jackson recorded her eleventh home run of the season during that game, a two-run shot to right center field. Jackson now leads the ACC with 13 home runs and 33 walks.

After two games, the two teams know each other well, so there should be few surprises. A pair of freshman represents the Hoyas' best weapons offensively. Peters leads the Georgetown with seven doubles and 18 RBIs, while Jadig Garcia owns the team's best batting average at .313. Connell has been the Hoyas' top pitcher, with a 4.63 ERA and a 6-15 record.

Georgetown has not won a game since falling twice to the Terps. The Hoyas have dropped five games, including a pair to the UMBC Retrievers on April 3.

Both games with be available online on ACC Select, with a crew from WMUC Sports providing the play-by-play.
